John Isner v Frances Tiafoe Head to Head

The pair have played each other twice before, both matches played on American hard courts. Isner won at the US Open in 2016, and again, a year later, at the Cincinnati Masters.

Isner Saves Match Point to Beats Old Foe

Isner, who was given a first round bye, faced on old foe in his match on Thursday in the form of compatriot Steve Johnson, now ranked 107, a man whom he had played a number of times before, and who had an excellent recent record against him.

And, with serve dominating, it looked like history was about to repeat itself for the first part of the match.

Isner saved the only break points against serve in the first set, but could not stop Johnson winning the tie-break.

The pattern continued into the second set, and this time Isner found himself match point down against his compatriot. He managed to save that, and although he could not convert any of the eight break points of his own that he held next game, it was his turn to win a tie-break.

Finally he broke the Johnson serve in the eighth game of the third set, and served out next game.

Tiafoe Pushed Close by South American Veteran

Tiafoe had not played a great deal of tennis in 2922 prior to Houston and was still searching for his best form, but began his campaign in confident fashion with a straights sets defeat of fellow American Marcos Giron.

He faced then a clay court specialist in the form of the Uruguayan veteran Pablo Cuevas, the world number 105, and, although he made it through in the end, it was not without a battle.

Tiafoe began well enough, breaking Cuevas in the opening game of the match. But the South American responded with two breaks of his own to claim the first set.

Again the American broke his opponent at the start of the second set, and maintained his advantage until the tenth game, when he dropped his serve again. However, he immediately restored his advantage with another break, and was able to level the match up.

With no more break points offered or taken, the outcome of the match hinged on a third set tie-break. Cuevas wobbled at the wrong time from his point of view, dropped his serve twice, and Tiafoe made his third match point count.

Isner v Tiafoe Prediction and Tip
