Outplayed by Richard Gasquet in the first set tiebreak, Argentina’s Federico Coria made a solid recovery over the next two sets to reach the semifinals of a tour-level event for the first time since his maiden final appearance in Bastad last year.
After both players exchanged a break in the first set, Gasquet raced to win the tiebreak 7-1. Down a set, the 30-year-old Argentine began the turnaround in the second set. He broke the Frenchman twice to take the second without much trouble, but didn’t have a good start to the third, falling 0-2 behind. But Coria fought back yet again, breaking in the third and ninth games before closing out the match 6-7 (1-7), 6-1, 6-4 in two hours and 30 minutes.
Coria had also beaten the seventh seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in three sets in the first round, holding off the Spaniard 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 in two hours and 18 minutes.
He had a much easier second round outing against Mirza Basic, knocking out the Bosnian 6-4, 6-2.
Following Friday’s win, Coria improved to 10-7 for the season. Before Marrakech, his best this season were two quarterfinal finishes in Buenos Aires and Rio.

Goffin Rebounds to Beat Carballés Baena
Belgium’s David Goffin came back from a set down to beat Spain’s Roberto Carballés Baena in the quarterfinals in Marrakech on Friday.
The 31-year-old lost a closely contested first set tiebreak, but clawed his way back into the contest, winning the second set and then completely dominated the third set to bagel the Spaniard and take the match 6-7 (6-8), 6-4, 6-0 in two hours and 35 minutes.
A five-time champion on the tour, the world No. 74 struck 10 aces during the match. He won 83% first serve points, converted six of 11 break points and saved half of the four break points.
Goffin had also rallied to win his Round of 16 match against Pablo Andujar, fighting back to beat the Spaniard 5-7, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 in two hours and 47 minutes to record his 300th tour-level victory.
Earlier, the Belgian had beaten Damir Dzhumur 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) in the first round.
With Friday’s win, Goffin improved his season record to 9-9. The former World No. 7 was also a quarterfinalist in Sydney but retired mid-match against Andy Murray. This will be his first semifinal since winning the Montpellier title in February last year.
Coria v Goffin Prediction and Tip
Expect this to be a cracking contest between two gutsy, in-form players. Goffin, who has been inconsistent since the Montpellier win, is playing well again and will be aiming to reach a 15th career final.
