John Isner v Cristian Garin Head to Head
Garin leads the rivalry 2-1. The Chilean won in the Canadian and Paris Masters in 2019, while Isner got his Canadian revenge last year.

Isner Sends Tiafoe Packing
A day after hitting a tournament-record 38 aces in Houston, John Isner struck 16 aces to eliminate Frances Tiafoe in the quarterfinals on Friday. It was a second straight three-set win for the World No. 7, who improved his season record to 8-8.
The 36-year-old had on Thursday saved a match point in the second set before claiming a 6-7 (1-7), 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 victory in two hours and 20 minutes over compatriot Steve Johnson in the second round.
He needed just under two hours to dispatch another American, Frances Tiafoe, in the quarterfinals on Friday.
Isner broke Tiafoe in the 10th game of the first set to go one-set up, but the World No. 30 came back in the second, breaking the fourth seed twice and taking the match the distance.
The 16-time tour-level champion got off to a brisk start in the third set, racing to a 3-0 lead and then protected the break advantage till the end of the match for a 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 victory that put him in the semifinals for the second time in the season.
Isner had earlier made it to the final four in Dallas only to be beaten by Reilly Opelka. He will be aiming to reach a 30th tour-level final on Saturday. His 29th handed him a 16th title last year in Atlanta.
In Houston, he has a 17-10 record, having won the title in 2013 and finished runner-up in 2012. Can he reach another final on clay?

Garin Outlasts Fritz
Reigning champion Cristian Garin extended his unbeaten run in Houston to eight matches as he outlasted second seed Taylor Fritz in a thrilling three-set quarterfinal on Friday.
The Chilean had won the title in 2019 by defeating Casper Ruud in the final. The tournament wasn’t held the last two years due to the pandemic.
Seeded No. 5, Garin had come to Houston with a woeful 3-7 season record, which included five consecutive defeats leading up to the tournament. But the World No. 29 returned to form in Houston, after scoring three tough three-set victories. In the first round, Garin overturned a one-set deficit to beat Jack Sock 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 in two hours and 24 minutes.
He lost the first set again in the second round to Jordan Thompson, but found a way to beat the Aussie 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 in two hours and 12 minutes.
In the quarterfinal on Friday, Garin took the first set with two breaks of serve. He found himself up a break twice in the second set, but Fritz wiped off the advantage on both the occasions. The set eventually needed a tiebreak, which was won by Fritz.
Having got used to playing three-setters, Garin raced to a 5-0 lead in the third set and then lost three straight games, squandering three match points during the phase. The World No. 13, trying to make a valiant return, had three break points in the ninth game, but the Chilean saved them all before converting his fifth match point for a 6-2, 6-7 (5-7), 6-3 win in two hours and 44 minutes.
Garin will now be aiming to reach a seventh tour-level final. He has a 5-1 record in finals and all six of those finals have come on clay.
Isner v Garin Prediction and Tip
Both have had to deal with some tough contests in the lead-up to the semifinals and they will be prepared for another gruelling three-setter. Expect this to go the distance with Garin extending his Houston streak.
