Carreno Busta Looking for First Clay Win

Since winning four matches in a row at the start of the season at the ATP Cup, Carreno Busta has hit bit of a roadblock as far as his form is concerned. The next 11 matches, as a result, have yielded just five victories, with those six losses including a defeat in the only previous match he played on clay in 2022.

That came at Rio where he had a first round bye which was followed by a comeback-from-behind win for Fabio Fognini in the second round.

What makes things slightly more underwhelming for Carreno Busta is his struggles on hard court surfaces too. After a second round loss at Acapulco, Carreno Busta has won a mere one match across the Miami Masters and Indian Wells Masters.

For him to turn things around on clay will take some doing but he would do well to remember both his titles last season had come on this surface.

Baez Scrapes Through the Qualifiers

21-year-old Baez was ranked 312th last season and all of a sudden, his ranking has improved to 66th in the world. This has primarily been thanks to his performances on the Challenger circuit but earlier this year, Baez showed what he is capable of at the highest level too.

At Cordoba he defeated Fernando Verdasco and Cristian Garin to reach the quarterfinals and then proceeded to make it to his first ever final of an ATP tournament in February. That came in Santiago where he then went down to Pedro Martinez in the title-decider.

Which is also why he went into both his qualifying rounds as a huge favourite here, only to be sent into a third set. Against Marco Cecchinato, he needed to come back from a set down to win it in a final set tie-breaker before needing another three-setter against Kamil Majchrzak in the second.

He now takes on a player of much superior pedigree but one who has struggled in recent times. Can he find himself another gear here?

Carreno Busta v Baez Prediction and Tip

While Baez has done well on clay all year long, Carreno Busta’s better quality should see the Spanird eke out a narrow win.
