Novak Djokovic v Karen Khachanov Head to Head

Djokovic leads Khachanov 5-1. Khachanov’s only win came in the Paris Masters final in 2018. Apart from that defeat Djokovic has dominated the rivalry.

The Serb won their only meeting on clay at Roland Garros in 2020 and also won their only other meeting this year, beating Khachanov in straight sets in Dubai.

Djokovic Comes Back a Second Time to Advance

World no. 1 Novak Djokovic overturned a one-set deficit for the second consecutive time to advance to the semifinals of the Serbia Open.

The two-time Belgrade champion, who had scored a comeback win over compatriot Laslo Djere in the Round of 16 on Wednesday, followed a similar pattern Thursday, knocking out fellow Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic in the quarterfinal for the second straight year.

Last year, the win came in straight sets, but this year Kecmanovic is in terrific form and was playing in his fifth consecutive quarterfinal, so he was up for the fight. He didn’t face a break point in the first set, but capitalised on one of the six breaking chances he created for himself.

Djokovic conceded an early break in the second set as well, but clawed his way back with a break in the fourth and eighth games to force the decider. There was no stopping the top seed in the third set as he dropped just five points on his serve in the set, didn’t face a single break point and converted both the breaking chances to seal the match 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 in two hours and 19 minutes.

The win followed an even tougher 2-6, 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (7-4) victory over Djere in the first round, which lasted three hours and 22 minutes.

The 34-year-old, who lost in the Round of 32 of the Monte Carlo Open to Alejandro Davidovich Fokina is playing in just his third tournament this season. He was a quarterfinalist in Dubai, where he suffered a shock defeat to Jiri Vesely. Djokovic is 12-2 in Belgrade and will be hoping to reach a third final at home. He was a champion in 2009 and 2011 but faltered in the semifinals last season. Can he enter the title clash?

Khachanov Ends Losing Streak

Olympic silver medalist Karen Khachnov moved into the semifinals with a straight sets win over Brazil’s Thiago Monteiro on Thursday.

The World No. 26, who received a first-round bye and a second-round walkover against Roman Safiullin, finally ended a four match losing streak with a 7-5, 6-4 win over the Brazilian.

The skid began with a defeat to Djokovic in the Round of 16 in Dubai and since then Khachanov lost his opening matches in Indian Wells, Miami and Monte-Carlo.

This will be the third time this season when Khachanov will be featuring in the final four of a tournament. He had reached the final in Adelaide-1, finishing second best to Gael Monfils. He was also a semifinalist in Doha and a quarterfinalist in Adelaide-2.

In Thursday’s match, Khachanov served seven aces, didn’t double fault even once, saved the only break point that he faced and broke his opponent once in both the sets to wrap up the match in an hour and 42 minutes.

Djokovic v Khachanov Prediction and Tip

Having endured two tough matches against quality players, Djokovic would feel confident going into this match. He has always had an upper hand against Khachanov and should extend his dominance with another win over the Russian.
