Garbine Muguruza has not played since the Indian Wells because of injury and now returning back to the capital of the country she admitted to feeling quite a bit of pressure. Some of that pressure probably comes from the fact that she never advanced past the 2nd round in Madrid.
Perhaps this year will be different, the motivation is there and she showed it in the first round against Ajla Tomljanovic. The served was on full display and Muguruza settled into a nice rhythm in the 2nd set to win the match in two sets.
The Spaniard had somewhat of a disappointing run before the injury but she admitted that the time off did wonders for her body. She hopes to finally string together a good run on a surface where she has been dominant in the past before.

Good Run from Kalinina
Anhelina Kalinina is a noted clay specialist as the Ukrainian simply plays superbly on the surface. She posted a ridiculous 31-4 record on the surface last year and it allows her to break into the top 100 where she currently sits. Last week in Istanbul she played well but threw away a win against Martic.
Turning her attention to Madrid Kalinina got a good draw with Sloane Stephens in the first round in what was the American’s first match since Miami. Stephens can play well on clay but recently it’s been rather poor and not just on clay.
In this match, Kalinina was in control from the start. She exploited Stephens and her ability to spray errors continuously and from there it was a rather simple finish for the Ukrainian. Can she do the same against Muguruza? Find out below.
Muguruza v Kalinina Prediction and Tip
Okay, so this is a very interesting matchup where I think one thing will be crucial. It’s the serve. Both of them are able to serve well but in these conditions, Muguruza will have a clear advantage. If she can hit her first serve as much as she did against Tomljanovic she will be in a very strong position.
She can also outlast Kalinina from the baseline because she also tends to hit as hard as the Ukrainian. Overall it’s simply a question of being more capable of outlasting her opponent and I think she got an advantage there. Kalinina ran into that problem against Martic and she might struggle again.
We might see three sets but I doubt it. I liked what I saw from Muguruza and I think she will continue playing well.
