de Minaur On the Brink of Top 20

Alex de Minaur is having a very good season as the Australian got quite a bit better in the offseason. The improvement is most evident in his clay game which was atrocious in the past season. This year it’s been rather solid with him nearly beating Carlos Alcaraz out of all people in Barcelona.

He’s 16-8 on the season and he’s up to 24 in the rankings coming fairly close to his career ranking. de Minaur will have a decent shot in Madrid as the court should play to his advantage. If he can serve as well as he is capable then he will be a dangerous opponent.

His spot is a superb asset on the surface and his movement is getting much better. All of that combined makes it very hard to hit through him although it’s going to be easier in Madrid than on the rest of the clay circuit. A semifinal in Barcelona should give him enough confidence to start off strong.

Career year for Pedro Martinez

Pedro Martinez is having a career year and it’s not even close. The Spaniard is firmly ranked inside the top 50 and there is a good chance it might even improve with the way he has played so far this year. The record is 13-9 and that’s pretty good.

Clay is his best surface and it’s not even close. He’s been excellent on it for a few years albeit he’s having more trouble this year. It’s not because he forgot to play tennis but simply because he’s playing against stronger players. In Monte-Carlo, he was downed by Hubert Hurkacz in three.

In Barcelona, he lost to Ivashka and that was his worst match in a very long time. Losses like that one should not happen especially against players that are not that strong on clay. Either way, Madrid will be tricky for him because of the altitude but he will have the support of the crowd.

De Minaur v Martinez Prediction and Tip

If this matchup was played on any other clay court than Madrid I would think it would be a very close match. Martinez has the ability t stay with the Australian on the red clay however Madrid will make that tough. de Minaur will have plenty of chance to shorten the points with serves and he generally hits harder.

That should work well for him against Martinez who might resort to some tricker with drop shots and similar stuff. If the Spaniard can bait his opponent into mistakes we might see a close match. I just don’t see it with the altitude so I’m going to stick with Alex in two.

Tip: de Minaur to win in straight sets: 11/10 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
