Dominic Thiem v Andy Murray Head to Head

The head-to-head is tied at 2-2 between both players.

Their last meeting was on the hard courts of Beijing in 2019 where Thiem prevailed and their last clay meeting was on the clay courts of Barcelona with the Austrian prevailing there too, back in 2017

Thiem Looking For First Win On Return

2020 US Open winner and two time French Open finalist Dominic Thiem continues his return to the tour.

After losing out in the first round of the ATP Challenger in Marbella, Thiem returned to the main tour two weeks ago at the Serbia Open in Belgrade.

The Austrian opened his campaign against Aussie John Millman in a match that went to a decider which was scalped by Millman with Thiem broken to love serving to stay in the match at 4-5.

The former world number three continued his quest to return to the level he was at during the 2019-2020 timeframe and was hoping for a better run this week here in Estoril heading into the clay Masters 1000s and the French Open next month.

However, another up and down performance followed from the Austrian and despite a strong showing in the second set, it was a straight set loss in the tiebreak to Benjamin Bonzi of France.

Thiem returns to Madrid where he was runner-up in 2017 and 2018 as well as semi-finalist last year and will be looking to a familiar venue to rekindle good form and mark his clay revival.

Can The Murray Comeback Up A Notch?

Andy Murray, former world number one has been on the comeback trail since his hip surgery for a couple years now.

While he has pulled off some convincing wins against highly ranked players, the Briton still has not managed to exhibit the necessary stamina to take the run deep into tournaments.

This season has seen him make the finals at Sydney Down Under being runner-up to Aslan Karatsev, but the rest of the year has followed a similar trend of early losses after a good opening round win against the likes of Nikoloz Basilashvili and Alexander Bublik.

Andy Murray is no stranger to clay being runner-up at the French Open in 2016, as well as winning her in Madrid in 2015 and runner-up the following year.

A game well suited to the grind that clay needs, Murray will be hoping for a strong start here and a win against the likes of Dominic Thiem will be a huge boost for the three-time major winner.

Thiem v Murray Prediction and Tip

This could well have been a semi-final or final encounter a few years ago. However, both are not quite where they used to be with their form and game.

While Thiem is still early in the comeback, Murray has shown the ability to be at his effective best earlier in the tournaments, and will be the case here as well, given he should be fresh from the time off since the hard court swing.

A tight encounter with Murray prevailing in a decider.
