Diego Schwartzman v Grigor Dimitrov Head to Head

They played three times in the past with Dimitrov leading 2-1. The most recent one came in 2017 at Wimbledon with Dimitrov winning 7-6(4) 6-2 6-2.

Schwartzman’s Solid Start

Diego Schwartzman drew Benoit Paire in Madrid after the Frenchman won his first matches of the season in the qualifiers. It was an interesting affair that forced the Argentine to play three sets but he was able to outlast Paire in the final one. It’s been a solid run as of recent for Diego with a couple of good showings.

He spent the past week in Estoril doing promotions and other things after pulling out of the Estoril Open due to fatigue. It had not bothered him against Paire but it’s something to keep an eye on especially against Dimitrov who is a superb athlete in his own right.

Schwartzman is 19-9 this year with a 15-5 record on clay so far. He never played that great in Madrid but he’s certainly in good shape right now. If he is fit and keeps his quick step from round one he should be competitive against Dimitrov.

Dimitrov’s Clay Resurgence

Grigor Dimitrov did not play that well in the past month or two but he found some good form during the Monte-Carlo Masters. It’s one of his favourite events and he traditionally does really well so the result was not a surprise. He somewhat kept that up in Barcelona but Stefanos Tsitsipas proved too strong.

In Madrid, it was a solid round one match against Cressy who is not a very strong clay player.

Dimitrov played superbly as the forehand and backhand were working along with the serve. He served really well and he will need his serve if he wants to do well in Madrid.

This is far from his best event and he usually loses quite early in the event. He will hope to play in round 2 similar to how he played in round one as that will ensure him a very good chance against Schwartzman. He’s beaten him before and Madrid certainly him better chances than usual.

Schwartzman v Dimitrov Prediction and Tip

So this matchup is rather simple for me. On one side we have Schwartzman who is the better clay player than Dimitrov and it’s not even close. He has the weapons to frustrate the Bulgarian and he can certainly beat him easily. On the other hand, we have Dimitrov whose game is a better fit for Madrid.

A lot will come down to the serve of Dimitrov as he will need to really strong on it if he hopes to win. Schwartzman is a very good returner and if he can handle the serve well he’ll be in good shape. It’s pretty tough to call as neither have played that well in Madrid.

Dimitrov’s game is a better fit but Schwartzman has played a tiny bit better recently. I think it goes three so the over might be something you want to take a look at. In terms of the winner, I’ll take Diego.

Tip: Schwartzman to win in three sets: 3/1 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
