Jessica Pegula v Sara Sorribes Tormo Head to Head

Tormo holds a 2-0 lead, last beating the American in the Indian Wells 125K in 2019.

Tormo Posts her Best Results

In what has been a remarkable tournament for Sara Sorribes Tormo, the local favourite has done well to overcome all odds and make it to the quarterfinal for the first time in Madrid. What’s even more impressive is up until now, she had never made it past the second round in nine attempts.

The 25-year-old, who is the current World No. 47, achieved this feat after defeating former French Open runner-up Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, former #1 Naomi Osaka, and Daria Kasatkina. It also marks the first time in 2022 that Tormo has won at least three matches in a tournament, let alone beating so many big names in quick succession.

Perhaps, being the crowd’s favourite and playing at home has its own advantages; it may also be due to her preference for clay. Tormo has 15 ITF clay finals of which she won nine. Plus, she won the Istanbul Cup doubles with Marie Bouzkova last month.

While Pegula makes for a strong opponent, upsets are known to happen this late and the precedent is certainly there for Tormo to build on.

Pegula Halts Andreescu Advance

Jessica Pegula paved her way to the quarterfinal in the 2022 Mutua Madrid Open after surpassing Bianca Andreescu 7-5, 6-1 in round three. In the preceding rounds, she defeated Kaia Kanepi and Camila Giorgi.

Currently ranked World No. 14, the American has enjoyed such moments a few times this season. In the Australian Open, she reached the same round after beating the likes of Anhelina Kalinina and Maria Sakkari. In Miami, she made it as far as the semis – this time by dismissing Elena Rybakina, Kalinina, and Paula Badosa.

Although Pegula is yet to win a title on clay, she did reach the quarters in the Italian Open last year. She also jumped some 50 odd places in the rankings to make her top-20 debut.

Pegula v Tormo Prediction and Tip

Pegula may start as the odds-on favourite but you can never underestimate a player who is playing on her home turf. Tormo has all the makings of being a dark horse and given her odds, she does make for an appealing bet.

But on a safer side, we may be looking at a possible three-setter here.
