Rafael Nadal v Carlos Alcaraz Head to Head
Rafael Nadal has beaten Carlos Alcaraz in each of their previous two head-to-head meetings. The first took place in Madrid last season, with the experienced Spaniard running away a 6-1 6-2 victor. But their clash at Indian Wells earlier this year was a classic, with Nadal outlasting his younger opponent in three sets.

Nadal Survives Goffin Scare
Rafael Nadal played with his supporters’ nerves for a little over three hours in his Round of 16 match against David Goffin. The Spaniard appeared to be cruising, leading Goffin by a set a break.
But this has not been an easy ride for the Spaniard despite his fabulous start to the campaign. The lack of match practice in recent weeks proved telling as was Goffin’s confidence which rocked the 35-year-old. The resurgent Belgian won four straight games from 3-5 down in the second set saving a couple of match points in the process, outmuscling Nadal and going for the kill.
With Goffin forcing a decider, it was only fitting there was a grandstand finish to the match as the final set went into a tiebreak. The Belgian star fluffed his lines at four match points of his own in the tiebreak.
First, at 6-5 he netted what seemed an easy forehand. Then at 7-6, his passive play was punished by Nadal’s outrageous dropshot. And the legendary Spaniard repeated the trick to save a third match point. Goffin didn’t quite recover from that collapse as he fired his final forehand into the tramlines.

Alcaraz Holds Off Norrie
In a match perhaps not as dramatic as Nadal’s, but still not lacking in quality, Carlos Alcaraz defeated Cameron Norrie 6-4 6-7 6-3 to reach the quarterfinals of the Madrid Open for the first time.
The Madrid Open poster boy was also celebrating his birthday, so while this was a case of double celebration, Alcaraz will now set his eyes on knocking out his countryman Nadal in Friday’s much-anticipated quarterfinal.
Alcaraz did not have everything going to plan against Norrie on Thursday. He had also lost his last two meetings against the Briton. In as much as this was going to be a war of attrition, the young Spaniard would also need to overcome the psychological hurdle in this matchup.
And he did so superbly, garnering a break back immediately after failing to serve out the first set. In the second set, Norrie broke Alacaraz’s serve for the second time in the match, but the 19-year-old’s response was swift. Ultimately though, the Briton held his nerve in the tiebreak, earning a single mini-break to force a third set.
But it was all Alcaraz in the decider. The World No. 9 broke Norrie at the start of the third, and he got his insurance break towards the end to clinch victory.
Nadal v Alcaraz Prediction and Tip
Alcaraz’s maturity is something to behold. Even at 18, the way in which he keeps his emotions in check is a major testament to his game management and discipline. Last year, he was overwhelmed by Nadal at this stage, but the scenario looks a lot different now. Odds on Alcaraz being instilled as the favorite are just about right.
