Denis Shapovalov v Lorenzo Sonego Head to Head

Shapovalov and Sonego have never played each other before this.

Shapovalov Shocked by Murray

Playing in his first clay court event of the season, Shapovalov did well to overcome Ugo Humbert in straight sets at the Madrid Masters last week.

However, starting out as a 1/2 favourite against Britain’s Andy Murray, the Canadian fell to a three-set, shock loss against the former Wimbledon winner. This isn’t to say Murray cannot hold his own on clay, having reached the French Open final on one occasion and having been a four-time semifinalist other times.

To go down, however, to a player struggling with form and fitness issues wouldn’t have augured too well for Shapovalov.

And that defeat came on the back of a a third round exit in Indian Wells Open and a second round defeat in Miami, both of which had followed opening round byes.

Can Shapovalov shrug off a recent run of poor showings to gun down a player who considers clay as his second home (not to mention playing at his first home in Italy!)

Sonego’s Slow Start on Clay This Season

While it’s all good to say Sonego loves playing on clay, his record on this surface this season has been underwhelming and that’s been charitable.

Sonego has participated in six competitions on red dirt this year and won just six matches – a semifinal in Buenos Aires earlier in February was his best showing but that was more than compensated by a first round defeat at Madrid last week.

Making matters worse for Sonego was that loss in Madrid came at the hands of Jack Draper, a Brit who was 5/2 to win it having been ranked 121st in the world. He lost in straight sets too.

Now, starting out against a player who isn’t quite at his best on clay, last year’s semifinalist Sonego might give himself a chance to notch up his seventh win of the season on clay. Can he overcome his red dirt yips though?

Shapovalov v Sonego Prediction and Tip

There’s not much to choose between the two but rather interestingly Shapovalov starts off a 4/5 favourite as opposed to Sonego who is 1/1 to win this. The Italian, with a solid performance last year in Rome and playing at home, could edge this contest.

Tip: Sonego to win: 1/1 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
