Shuai Zhang v Martina Trevisan Head to Head

The pair have played each other once before, on the hard courts of Cleveland last year, Zhang winning in straight sets.

Lyon Winner Zhang

Zhang claimed the Lyon Open title in March, proving that she could win outside China. Both of her two previous WTA successes had come on home soil in Guangzhou.

All her singles final wins have come on hard courts, and her two doubles Grand Slam titles as well. However, she proved that can adapt to clay by reaching the fourth round of the French Open in 2020. And, a year earlier, she had reached the quarter-finals in Rome.

Since Lyon, results have been inconsistent. She was beaten in the first round in Indian Wells but then got to the third round in Miami.

Since switching to clay, she has struggled a bit, with a  second round appearance in Charleston followed by successive first round defeats in Stuttgart, and Madrid, where she was beaten by Simona Halep.

Trevisan Makes Second Rome Appearance

This will be the second successive year that the Florentine Trevisan appears in the main draw in Rome. She lost in the first round last year.

If she is to take inspiration, it may be that her one senior WTA final came on clay in Italian soil, although that was in doubles, and she ended on the losing side in Palermo in 2020.

This year she has alternated between the main tour and the Challenger circuit, without notable success on either.

She missed Indian Wells and then failed to qualify for Miami, before losing in the first round in Istanbul. Forced to enter qualifying for Madrid because of her world ranking, she fell at the final hurdle there, beaten by the Estonian veteran Kaia Kanepi.

Zhang v Trevisan Prediction and Tip

Although Trevisan will have home advantage, she is not in good form and she is playing an opponent who has shown, in the past, the ability to adapt to clay.

Tip: Zhang to win: 9/10 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
