Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova v Leylah Fernandez Head to Head

It’s advantage 1-0 to Fernandez, who last defeated the Russian in the 2021 Indian Wells Open in three sets.

Pavlyuchenkova on a Road to Recovery

The season so far hasn’t been particularly kind to Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova as she spent a good couple of months on the sidelines due to her knee injury.

She started the year with a third-round run in the Australian Open (loss to Sorana Cirstea) after which, she was forced to miss out on a lot of action. The 30-year-old didn’t return to the tour until the Madrid Open last week when she fell in the opener to Sara Sorribes Tormo in three sets.

While the #15-ranked Pavlyuchenkova may be a bit rusty, that game in Madrid was a good indication of her fighting spirit and grit to go further.

The reigning French Open runner-up can play on clay and has a tendency to surprise when she is at her best. However, in Rome, she has reached the third round just twice in more than 10 years of playing here.

Fernandez Hoping for some Clay Momentum

Leylah Fernandez has had a rough stint on the clay swing so far as the young Canadian now looks to take things up a notch.

She started off with a first-round defeat to Magda Linette in Charleston and followed it with a second-round exit to Jil Teichmann in Madrid.

Between the two events, the World No. 20 also featured in the Billie Jean King Cup Qualifiers where she steered Canada to a comfortable win over Latvia. And earlier in the season, Fernandez successfully defended her title in Monterrey and reached the fourth round in Indian Wells.

As the current US Open runner-up, she has got a rich pedigree already at the age of 19 but a lack of experience may prove to be problematic here.

Pavlyuchenkova v Fernandez Prediction and Tip

Fernandez should start this as the favourite and will be optimistic about her chances, especially considering Pavlyuchenkova’s recent tryst with injury. However, the Russian has a superior track record on clay and if she is indeed feeling better, then there is no stopping her from reaching round two.

This should be an exciting match that can go either way.
