Coco Gauff v Angelique Kerber Head to Head

Kerber leads 1-0, defeating the American in their sole meeting in the 2021 Wimbledon.

Kerber Coming Off a Bleak Spell

Former world number one Angelique Kerber has had a largely underwhelming season as she looks for some solace on clay. She is 2-7 in 2022 with her best run coming in Indian Wells when she reached the fourth round – upsetting Daria Kasatkina and Qinwen Zheng en route.

That aside, the 34-year-old has lost six opening-round matches across five tournaments – including the two in Billie Jean King Cup Qualifiers against Kazakhstan’s Yulia Putintseva and Elena Rybakina.

Kerber last played in Stuttgart – an event she has won twice in her career. There, she had the misfortune of running into the world number six Anett Kontaveit. In fact, two of her other defeats this season have come against Iga Swiatek and Naomi Osaka.

Although heavily experienced, Kerber’s lack of form at the moment does not do well for her chances of making it to the next round in Rome – especially against someone like Gauff.

Gauff Making Waves on the Tour

18-year-old Cori Gauff is now ranked World No. 16 – just one place shy of her career-best spot (achieved in April) and three places above Kerber.

While the American has had a relatively average spell so far, she has played a fair bit of tennis and in most of them, she has been pretty impressive. A quarterfinal stint in Doha and a round four appearance in Miami mark the highlights of her season; Gauff dismissed the likes of Shuai Zhang, Paula Badosa, and Caroline Garcia in these events.

She has been fairing well on the doubles circuit too, having won the Qatar Open with Jessica Pegula and reaching the final in Stuttgart with Zhang.

Kerber v Gauff Prediction and Tip

Gauff is primed well for the Italian Open and even though she just reached round three in Madrid (loss to Simona Halep), her strong service game and physical endurance makes her a formidable opponent to face on any surface, let alone clay.

Kerber hasn’t been in the best of the forms this season – something that the bookmakers haven’t failed to notice and consequently offer higher odds on her.

But Gauff seems to be the safer option with the possibility of this being a long match.

Tip: Over 21.5 Games, Gauff to Win: 8/5 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
