Veronika Kudermetova had a superb run on hard courts to start the year and it indicated a big breakout season for the Russian yet she was unable to replicate that form so far on clay. She played in Istanbul reaching the final which was good but that event did not have a strong field.

Then she went to Madrid and got smacked by Paula Badosa relatively easily in the first round. She is 4-2 on clay this year and 16-9 overall. It’s a very good year for Kudermetova who is very consistent and capable of playing different styles of tennis.

Historically she has been very good clay and last year she went 14-4 on the surface. She played well in Rome last year dropping out to Ashleigh Barty.

Clay Success For Sasnovich?

Aliaksandra Sasnovich is playing very good tennis recently with the player from Belarus finally getting everything right on the court. She flashed potential in the past before but she never quite found a consistent level to elevate her tennis to a new height.

Last year was a step in the right direction and this year it’s been pretty good overall with a 17-8 record on the year. She will certainly cement her place inside the top 50 if she continues to play like this. She certainly belongs there. Clay has been a mixed bag so far this year with a 2-2 record on the surface but historically it’s a very good surface for her.

Kudermetova is a tricky opponent but also one that Sasnovich can beat on her good day. The Belarussian player went through the qualies so she should be in a better rhythm than her opponent but it remains to be seen how well that translates.

So they never played before which is a shame as it would allow very valuable insight into how they match up. Stylistically it’s quite similar but Sasnovich is the better defender in rallies which should suit her well on clay. It has in the best.

Kudermetova likes to attack and I expect her to attack more than her opponent. That can work well if she hits her shots but badly if she doesn’t. She is prone to the occasional bad match so keep that in mind, especially with Sasnovich who is generally super solid.

I think it will be a tough match and I think we might see three sets but I will back Kudermetova as she played on a higher level this year than her opponent. Whether she brings it tomorrow remains to be seen but I reckon she will.
