Juan Martin del Potro Withdraws from Australian Open

Juan Martin del Potro will play the Delray Beach Open

Juan Martin del Potro has withdrawn from the 2019 Australian Open because of his knee injury.

The Argentine fifth-ranked player suffered his injury during the Shanghai Masters last year and he took the rest of the year off to recover from it. However, it was confirmed by del Potro himself he will have to take a break from the competition to recover from his knee injury.

While wishing his fans on Twitter, del Potro said:

“I hope you have a great 2019. Recovery is going great and I will tell you later where I will be making my comeback.”

“Unfortunately it won’t happen in Australia … but I’m happy with my progress.”

Del Potro made it to the 2018 US Open final before losing to Novak Djokovic and this was followed by making it into the final at China Open. The Argentine then featured at Shanghai Masters where he won his opener before his injury in the round two against Borna Coric brought about a fall.

The Australian Open begins January 14. All the top players have confirmed their participation in the tournament including the likes of Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Alexander Zverev.

In the women’s side of the draw, Simona Halep will lead the action with defending champion Caroline Wozniacki and Serena Williams expected to play.
