Novak Djokovic v Aslan Karatsev Head to Head

It’s 1-1 between the two. Djokovic won their semifinal meeting at the Australian Open last year, while Karatsev won at the Belgrade Open semifinal in 2021.

Djokovic In Search of Season’s First Title

He has now played in four tournaments but is still looking to win his first title. Can the World No. 1 end a six-month title-less drought in Rome?

The Italian Open has always brought the best out of him and a 59-10 tournament record is a testament to that. Djokovic has also won five titles in the tournament, and has made it to the final in the last three editions, finishing runner-up to Rafael Nadal in 2019 and 2021 and winning the title in 2020, by beating Diego Schwartzman in the final.

His other four titles in Rome came in 2008, 2011, 2014 and 2015.

Of his 15 appearances in Rome, the 34-year-old Serbian has always reached at least the quarterfinals, falling just thrice at that stage and once in the semifinals, while reaching the final on 11 occasions.

Djokovic will be looking to deliver again in Rome. He is 7-4 this year, and although the 20-time Grand Slam champion comes into the tournament after suffering a three-and-a-half-hour semifinal loss to Carlos Alcaraz in Madrid, he is filled with optimism as he thought that the semifinal in the Spanish capital was his best this year.

Forced to miss out the early part of the season due to his vaccination status, Djokovic made a slow start, suffering early exits from Dubai and Monte-Carlo, but he found some form in Belgrade where he finished runner-up to Andrey Rublev and then was able to raise his level further in Madrid.

Karatsev Ends Four-Match Losing Streak

World No. 35 Aslan Karatsev ended a four-match skid with a gallant come-from-behind win over Lloyd Harris in the first round on Sunday.

The 28-year-old, who has gone off the boil after winning the Sydney International title at the start of the season, scored his first win since winning his second round match in Miami in March.

In an edge-of-the seat battle, Karatsev saved a match point in the deciding set tie-break before edging past the South African 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (9-7).

The Russian won just 106 points, three fewer than Harris’s 109 in the match, but he won a couple of crucial points that won him the match.

The 28-year-old, who is 2-1 in Italy, improved his season record to 10-10 after Sunday’s win.
