Shapovalov Survives Marathon

World no. 16 Denis Shapovalov outlasted Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego in a three-hour-and-10-minute thriller in the first round of the Rome Masters on Monday.

The match that swung from one end to the other saw Shapovalov come back from 3-5 down in the first set to take it in the tiebreak. Sonego won the second as he got the only break of the set in the eighth game.

With the match in the balance, the Canadian started the third set on a bright note, getting an early break and taking a 3-0 lead. He didn’t get broken again in the match as he edged out the World no. 28, 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 6-3.

The win improved the 23-year-old lefty to 14-8 in 2022. He played a pivotal role in Canada’s victorious run at the ATP Cup and then reached the last eight at the Australian Open. he was also a semifinalist in Dubai but has been quiet in the other tournaments.

This is just his second clay court tournament this season. He was 1-1 in Madrid, falling to Andy Murray in the round of 32.

Shapovalov was a semifinalist in Rime in 2020, where he improved to 10-4 following Monday’s win.

Basilashvili Takes Down Evans

World no. 25 Nikoloz Basilashvili won his opening match for the third consecutive tournament — a rare achievement for the Georgian in a season when he has struggled to register victories.

Basilashvili, who won his opening round matches in Munich and Madrid, advanced to the second round in Rome with a 7-6 (7-2), 6-2 win over Dan Evans.

The Georgian saved half of the four break points that he faced and converted four of the 11 that he held to win in an hour and 45 minutes. He also struck 38 winners and made five unforced errors compared to Evans’ 12 winners and 2 unforced errors.

The win was just his sixth in his 14th tournament this year. Three of those wins had come in Doha, where he reached the final before falling to Roberto Bautista Agut. Having found some sort of form on clay, he will now be looking to win consecutive matches for the first time since Doha.

Shapovalov v Basilashvili Prediction and Tip
