Jessica Pegula v Anhelina Kalinina Head to Head

This is an interesting head to head. Pegula leads 2-0 on the WTA circuit having defeated Kalinina both times they have faced off this season – at the Australian Open and the Miami Open.

However they did play each other on the ITF circuit as well, both matches having come in 2018 and at that stage of their careers, it was Kalinina who had gotten the better of Pegula both times.

Pegula 7-2 on Clay in 2022 after Samsonova Win

It wasn’t the easiest of opening round wins for Pegula as she took three sets to get past Luidmilla Samsonova but that was to be expected after the short turnaround time she had coming into this encounter.

Having played in the final of the Madrid Open on Sunday, the runnerup there came through 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 against Samsonova to book her second round spot.

This made it her seventh win on clay to go with just two defeats – one of which was to Ons Jabeur in that fighting final – and should give her the kind of confidence one needs entering the French Open in two weeks time.

Pegula was on court for two hours and 17 minutes to complete the victory, overcoming the one break of serve she suffered in the first set and another in the third before wrapping up the contest.

Kalinina is known to be a tricky opponent and given the lack of rest Pegula has had, things could get even trickier.

Kalinina in Some Form Herself

She might not have made it as far as the final in Madrid, but Kalinina has already done enough this year on clay to prove she would be a dangerous opponent for most. At a career-best ranking of 36th at the month, Kalinina was an easy winner over Madison Keys in her opener.

Kalinina defeated her American opponent 6-4, 6-4 to set up this meeting with another player from the USA. She was on court for a mere hour and 34 minutes and has had a day’s gap between her opening and second round encounters.

She was broken once in each set but retaliated with two breaks of serves to usurp Keys, having earlier gotten past Elena Rybakina and Alize Cornet in Charleston and Sloane Stephens, Garbine Muguruza and Emma Raducanu in Madrid.

Can she keep up her good form and take down the mighty Pegula as well?

Pegula v Kalinina Prediction and Tip

There’s Kalinina’s form which can be said to be at par with Pegula’s along with the extra day’s break she has had heading into this encounter which should give her bit of an edge here. Expecting a Kalinina shock.

Tip: Kalinina to win: 11/10 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
