Shapovalov Looking to Build on Rome Performance
Last year’s Geneva Open finalist, Denis Shapovalov will be looking to go one better this season and he brings good form to the tournament, having made it to the quarterfinals in Rome.
Shapovalov, who is still looking to add to his only ATP title won in Stockholm in 2019, got into good rhythm in Rome, beating Rafael Nadal en route the last eight, but couldn’t make the semifinals after being beaten by Casper Ruud.
Ruud had also denied him the title on his Geneva debut last year, beating the Canadian in straight sets in the final.
Ranked No. 15 in the world, Shapovalov is 4-2 on clay this year and 16-9 overall. He had played a pivotal role in Canada’s run to the ATP Cup title and then reached a maiden quarterfinal at the Australian Open. He was also a semifinalist in Dubai and quarterfinalist in Doha. He will be expected to reach another quarterfinal on Wednesday.

Ivashka struck nine aces and won 83% points on his first serve. Broken just once in the match, he converted three of nine break points to beat the American 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 in one hour and 54 minutes.
The win improved the Belarusian to 6-9 in 2022 and Monday’s win was his third on clay in what is his sixth tournament on the surface this year.
The winner of the Winston-Salem title last year has reached just one quarterfinal this season, at the Marseille Open. Can he reach another on Wednesday?
