Molcan Defeats Fifth Seed

Molcan, who finished runner-up in Marrakech last month, has got to the last eight in Lyon without dropping a set.

He began his campaign with a match against the wildcard Jo-Wilfred Tsonga who was playing in his penultimate tournament as a professional before finally hanging up his racquet after the French Open next week.

That earned him a second round match against the number five seed, Karen Khachanov, one of the men currently playing under a neutral flag.

The first set was dominated by serve until the point where Molcan broke Khachanov. One further break and he claimed the first set.

When Khachanov dropped his serve again midway through the second set, it looked like the match would soon be over. However, he managed to come up with a break of his own to take it to a tie-break. Molcan, though, proved to be the stronger player on the day, and was able to claim his quarter-final spot.

Coria Upsets Carreno-Busta

Like Molcan, Coria’s best recent result had come in Marrakech where he reached the semi-finals before losing to the eventual winner, David Goffin.

He began his campaign in Lyon with a match against the German Daniel Altmaier, overcoming the world number 54 in three sets.

That pitted him against the number two seed and world number 17, Pablo Carreno-Busta of Spain, the recent runner-up in Barcelona.

Serve dominated the first set to the extent that there was only one break point created on either side of the net until the 12th game. That was when Carreno-Busta, serving to stay in the set, offered Coria one opportunity, which he gratefully accepted.

The Spaniard bounced back by breaking Coria in the opening game of the second set. But he could not hold on to his advantage and was broken in turn, and then again.

That gave Coria the chance to serve for the match, which he did not spurn.

Molcan v Coria Prediction and Tip

Although both men upsets seeds in the second round, Molcan will start the favourite because of his higher ranking and better recent form on clay.
