Tommy Paul v Cristian Garin Head to Head

They played twice before and each won a match. The most recent one in Cincinnati last year was won by Paul 3-6 6-3 6-4.

Bad Clay Season for Paul

Tommy Paul is one of those American players that doesn’t mind playing on clay but this year it’s been rather poor. He’s having a good year with a 16-12 score overall but he’s only 2-5 on the red dirt. He’s played pretty much every weak but the American simply can’t produce the type of effort he is capable.

His only win on the European Clay this year has been against Albert Ramos and the Spaniard has struggled ever since Monte-Carlo. In every other match, Paul got defeated, even by players he normally should be good against. It’s a puzzling trend for him, especially after a strong start to the year.

This will be his 4th appearance at Roland Garros and his best result came last year with the 2nd round. He can win this matchup but he will need to find a good and consistent effort. He tens to play long matches in Paris as well so fitness is a worry.

Garin Seemingly Healthy

Cristian Garin has had a very dramatic season so far. He began the year with chronic shoulder pain due to an injury and contemplated retirement due to the inability to play without pain. A couple of months later it seems Garin is firmly set on continuing tennis seemingly healthy.

It’s been somewhat better since then but he’s still far away from the Garin of old who was a very solid player ranked inside the top 20. He’s 10-12 on the year and 7-8 on clay however a couple of good wins in Rome are encouraging for him heading into this one.

Garin has played fairly well in Paris before reaching the 4th round last year losing to Daniil Medvedev. If he can maintain that level from Rome he will be tricky to beat.

Paul v Garin Prediction and Tip

Neither of these players is having a special year on clay. Paul has tremendously struggled and backing him to win any match on clay at the moment seems like very risky business. Garin has shown promise in Rome but his fitness remains a question especially if Paul pushes this to 4 or 5 sets.

I could see this happening because neither has much consistency and the moment and momentum swings wildly on clay. With all that said, Garin has simply played better in recent weeks. It’s a small sample size and it possibly might mean nothing but he’s played better.

He’s also the better player on clay when fully healthy and let’s assume he is. So I’m going to back Garin. Could be 4 or could be 5 but I think he gets it done.
