Maria Sakkari would be a touch disappointed not to have been able to replicate her hard court form on clay so far, but the World no. 4 has some happy memories of Roland Garros from last year and will be hoping to at least match the 2021 performance, which saw her reach the semifinals.
Sakkari, who also reached the final four at the U.S. Open last year, had beaten 2020 French Open champion Iga Swiatek in the quarterfinals at Roland Garros last year.
The Greek player displayed sublime form on hard courts in the first quarter of the season, finishing runner-up in Indian Wells and St. Petersburg and also reaching the semifinals in Doha. She has not been able to have the same impact on clay yet.
Knocked out in her opening match in Stuttgart, she could only win one match in Madrid and two in Rome, falling to Ons Jabeur in the quarterfinals. It will be interesting to see if she can shake off the previous disappointments and have another solid run in Paris.

Burel Struggling Throughout the Season
Former junior No. 1 Clara Burel will be making her third main draw appearance at the French Open. She had made it to the third round on her debut two years ago.
It would be a huge achievement if the World No. 95 can top or even equal her previous best in Paris this season, as she begins her campaign against a very tough opponent, who has more experience and is ranked 91 places higher than her.
Burel’s recent form hasn’t been great either. This week she played in Rabat, winning her opener but falling in Round 2. That was still better from the weeks preceding the tournament as she made first round exits from an ITF event in Germany and also from the WTA 125 in Karlsruhe.
The Frenchwoman has mostly struggled this season, having won just four matches and lost nine from all competitions, including qualifiers. She won’t be expected to go past the first round, but one can expect her to fight in front of home fans.

Sakkari will be an overwhelming favourite. She should win in straight sets.
