John Isner v Quentin Halys Head to Head

The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first match between the 37 year old American, and his French opponent, who is twelve years younger.

Houston Finalist Isner

Although the clay of Paris would seem not to favour Isner’s natural game, with his reliance on his powerful serve, he has twice made the fourth round here, most recently in 2018.

And Isner’s CV does include four clay court finals, three of them in his home event of the US Men’s Clay Court Championship. He won it back in 2013, and, last month in Houston, he finished rummer-up to compatriot Reilly Opelka.

It was after that he made the switch to Europe, beginning in Madrid, where he reached the second round, before losing to Cameron Norrie.

Then in Rome Isner beat Francisco Cerundulo, before he ran into the “King of Clay” himself, Rafael Nadal. He took just four games off the Spaniard.

Halys Reaches Career High Ranking

Halys made his Grand Slam debut back in 2015 as a wild card in Paris, and the following year, after also being the recipient of a wildcard, he made the second round.

That remains Halys’ best in a Grand Slam event although this year, courtesy of his world ranking, he is entered straight into the main draw here.

The 25-year old has just reached a career high ranking, primarily due to his exploits on the Challenger tour this year – he has already been in five finals, most recently in Bordeaux earlier this month, winning two of them.

This, though, will be his first match on the senior tour since the Maharashtra Open in Pune in February, where he reached the second round before losing to the Pole Kamil Majchrzak.

Isner v Halys Prediction and Tip

Although Halys will have the support of the French crowd, he will have to deal with the Isner serve which, even on clay, remains a powerful weapon. That means rallies are unlikely to be long, and the American will probably be too strong for the local man.
