Naomi Osaka v Amanda Anisimova Head to Head

Anisimova leads 1-0, last beating the Japanese in the Australian Open round of 32 earlier this season in three sets.

Osaka, Taking it Slow and Easy

Naomi Osaka has not played a lot of tennis this season – a part of it is due to her emphasis on mental health while the other is owing to a right ankle injury she incurred a few weeks ago.

Now ranking World No. 38, the 24-year-old is 12-4 this season with her highlight being the runner-up feat at the Miami Open. She reached the final, ranked #77, before bowing out to Iga Swiatek in straight sets. Earlier in the season, Osaka was a semifinalist in Melbourne Set 1 as well.

As for her run on clay swing, she featured only in the Madrid Open where she lost to Sara Sorribes Tormo in round two. Osaka opted out of the Italian Open and now finds herself in Paris, low on form and momentum.

As a four-time Grand Slam champion, Osaka clearly has plenty of experience but her clay pedigree is not half as impressive. She has neither made it to the second week at Roland Garros nor has bagged a clay title (let alone reached a final). Amidst this, facing a player of Anisimova’s stature may make things difficult.

Anisimova, Coming off a Brilliant Run

By contrast, Amanda Anisimova has had a terrific clay swing so far. In the three tournaments she featured in – Charleston, Madrid, and Rome – she has reached the quarterfinal at the very least and semifinal just once.

The 20-year-old has also defeated a handful of big names like Belinda Bencic, Danielle Collins, Victoria Azarenka, and Aryna Sabalenka.

The number 27 seed will now face a stern test against Osaka – one she is better prepared for. After all, it was in Paris that she reached her maiden (and only) semifinal in a major.

The reigning Melbourne Summer Set champion is no stranger to defeating top 10 players, especially when she is in form.

Osaka v Anisimova Prediction and Tip

Anisimova makes for a great bet here, especially at the odds at which she is available. She is comfortable on clay, has had a much better run, and is bubbling with confidence and momentum. Osaka, on her part, can put up a good fight and even go the distance – but it may not be an easy one for her.

All in all, this match can swing either way but the American has the advantage.
