Griekspoor Shocks Fokina in Opener

Griekspoor was a whopping 29/10 odds underdog for his opening round encounter against Alejandro Davidovich-Fokina and when he lost the first set, things looked to have gone according to the script and against him.

That’s when he mounted a solid comeback, fighting to win in four sets – a 2-6, 6-0, 6-4, 6-3 victory that helped him win his first ever main draw match at French Open.

It was just his third main draw win at majors too, following on from his second round appearances at the US Open last year and the Australian Open earlier this season.

The match lasted a mere two hours and 13 minutes, with a total of 13 breaks of serve in the encounter. Both players helped themselves to three breaks of serves apiece in the first two sets, then shared two in the third before Griekspoor won the set off the third set-point he had.

The same script repeated itself in the fourth as well before Griekspoor completed the victory with a decisive break in the eighth game to wrap up the encounter.

Griekspoor now has a chance to go one better than his previous record in Grand Slams.

Nakashima Wins Maiden French Open Match

Nakashima’s previous Grand Slam best have both come at US Open, with the American getting to the second round in both the previous two editions of the competition. This win over his first round opponent Kamil Majchrzak makes it his maiden second round appearance in a major other than US Open.

And it turned out to be a hard-fought victory in a match that lasted three hours and 38 minutes, with Nakashima needing five sets to come through.

The world number 75 overcame his 79th-ranked opponent 6-4, 2-6, 4-6, 7-6 (3), 6-2 to set up this meeting with Griekspoor, with both Nakashima and Majchrzak sharing six breaks of serves in the encounter.

Nakashima will now hope to make it two in two but will know how difficult that is given he has never won successive matches on clay.

Griekspoor v Nakashima Prediction and Tip

Griekspoor will start off a favourite here and can be expected to win but not before Nakashima could take a set off him.
