Lorenzo Sonego v Joao Sousa Head to Head

There have been two previous meetings between them and they have been shared by Sonego and Sousa.

Sousa won their encounter on clay in 2016 at the Rome Masters that season while Sonego avenged that defeat on the grass courts of Antalya in 2019.

Struggling Sonego Gets Opening Relief

It’s been a forgettable season for Sonego as he’s crashed to one defeat after another and was 10-13 on win-loss record for the season.

This included just six wins from 13 matches on clay and while he was an overwhelming favourite coming into his opener against Peter Gojowczyk, there was always that niggling question if Sonego would live up to that billing.

Fortunately for the Italian player, he did not waste too much time in getting past Gojowczyk, registering a 6-2, 6-2, 6-1 victory. The world number 35 was on court for a mere hour and 46 minutes before coming through.

Sonego will hope he can carry some of that form into this encounter against a player who is ranked 63rd in the world and not the most proficient on clay either despite his Geneva result.

Sousa Huffs and Puffs to First Round Win

He was 4/5 to win the opening encounter but Sousa needed to bring out all his experience to get past Chun Hsin Tseng in that match.

Sousa was on court for almost four and a half hours before registering a 6-7 (5), 6-1, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 win over his Chinese Taipei opponent. The match hung in balance till the very end before Sousa edged forward with a break of serve in the ninth game and then completed the win by serving out the next.

What’s interesting to note is Sousa broke his opponent a whopping eight times while losing his own serve just thrice in the match and yet, found a way to find himself in a sticky situation.

The Portuguese player will now have a stiffer contest in the offing but against a struggling second round opponent. Can he out-think Sonego with his experience?

Sonego v Sousa Prediction and Tip

Sonego is a favourite here at 9/20 but we think Sousa has the game and experience to challenge that. Expect Sonego to still come through but not before Sousa has troubled him enough.

Tip: Sonego to win AND Both players to win a set: 8/5 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
