Before coming into this tournament this season, Gaston’s tennis career had seen a total of one match on grass – a qualifier at Wimbledon last year. And he had lost that in three sets.

Unfamiliar Territory for van Rijthoven
If Gaston’s wins in this tournament were the first of his career on grass, van Rijthoven is looking at a totally different kind of a first. Never in his tennis career has van Rijthoven won back to back matches at the highest level like he did in this competition.
In fact, by defeating Taylor Fritz in the second round, van Rijthoven marked just his third career win on the ATP circuit. Yes, van Rijthoven had come into this competition with just one main draw victory under his belt.
In the first round, van Rijthoven had needed two tie-breakers to overcome Matthew Ebden but it was a bigger shock against Fritz, the world number 14.
van Rijthoven narrowly lost the first set off the eighth set-point he faced, but then came back to level the proceedings in the second set when he broke his American opponent in the 12th game.
The final set almost followed the same script as the second as Fritz failed to hold serve as he looked to stay in the match at 4-5.
With that kind of confidence, the heavy-serving van Rijthoven might fancy himself a chance here.
