Cerundolo Resumes Tennis Following Poor Clay Court Swing
Clay has been Cerundolo’s go-to all his career – it’s not been a very long one so far anyway – which makes his performances on this surface between April and June somewhat of a surprise.
The Argentine, who was ranked 127th in the world at the start of the season and has climbed up more than 80 places since, would have liked to do a lot better than the one main draw match he won in the five tournaments he featured in, in the aforementioned period.
That victory came at Lyon where he scraped past James Duckworth in the first round but other than that, there was nothing in it for him.
Moving to grass, Cerundolo’s experience on this surface reads exactly three matches played, two won and one lost. All these three came at the Wimbledon 2021 qualifiers where the world number 46 narrowly missed out on making it to the main draw.
Can he win his first career match on this surface now?

Martinez’s Clay Court Season No Better Either
Much like Cerundolo, Martinez loves his clay and in a not too dissimilar fashion even he struggled through that period between April and June.
The Spaniard began well with a first round win at the Monte-Carlo Masters where he won his first round match but since then hasn’t done it again. Following that, Martinez has lost six matches in a row, including one to Henri Laaksonen who was a whopping 14/5 second favourite going into that French Open opener.
This is the same player, who, not so long ago had won his first career ATP title on clay, winning three of his four matches at the Santiago Open as a second-favourite to lift the trophy there.
Martinez will hope to turn things around on grass but it’s a surface he is not too well-versed with despite having reached the third round at Wimbledon last year.
The good news for him is, Cerundolo is in the same boat as him when it comes to grass.
Cerundolo v Martinez Prediction and Tip
While Martinez starts out a favourite, a six-match losing streak would be difficult to overcome and more so on a surface he is not too comfortable. Backing a Cerundolo victory here.
