They played once before and Paul won that match. It happened this year in Acapulco as Berrettini retired up 6-1 1-5.

Berrettini Barely Past Kudla
Matteo Berrettini was in serious trouble when he faced a 15-40 situation in the 2nd set down 0-1 in sets against Denis Kudla. It was at a time when the American played better tennis and was pretty close to beating the defending champion in Queen’s.
A couple of serves saved that game and the match essentially as Berrettini won the 2nd set in the tiebreak behind 23/23 after hitting his first service. He threw away an early lead in the final set but broke his opponent at the perfect time to still win the match.
It was the shakiest Berrettini looked in a very long time on grass and he also dealt with some blisters on his hand which clearly bothered him. Overall though a very solid performance with over 20 aces and a lot of free points due to his serve. He probably would have won easier if Kudla did not produce a spectacular effort. After all, Berrettini is 17-1 on grass when you combine this and last year so he’s very good on the surface.
If he can keep up this consistency and if the blisters don’t prove too big of an issue, Berrettini should be able to capture another trophy on grass. There are not many players that can really hurt him but Paul could be the one to do it.

Paul Cruising in London
Tommy Paul really had a practice match against Stan Wawrinka as the American won in just 64 minutes 6-1 6-4. It was a fast-paced match as neither wanted long rallies and both serves working pretty well. Paul demonstrated a high level of confidence on the grass and generally his play is all risk and hopefully all reward.
He likes to attack with both the forehand and backhand and it’s working pretty well this week on grass. Wawrinka was an easy opponent so the result is not surprising but the win over Denis Shapovalov in round one is certainly impressive. It was a bit lucky to be fair but Shapovalov played in the semifinal at Wimbledon last year so take note.
Paul won the previous match against Berrettini albeit due to retirement. It was a close match and I expected another one here. Paul will need his serve although so far this week it has not given him a huge advantage. Most of the time he gets a shorter ball and he finishes off with the winner.
Berrettini will have more free points on his serve but the play from the baseline will be key. If he can exploit Berrettini’s backhand he will have a chance. It will be tough but so far it’s been working this year.
Berrettini v Paul Prediction and Tip
So this should be a very close match. I’m not sure we will see three sets but I could see it happening. It will all come down to how well Paul plays. He needs a supernatural effort to win this match mostly due to the serve of Berrettini but he is capable of it.
If he can keep it close and win a couple of important rallies there is a chance for him to squeeze out sets in the tiebreak. I don’t see him breaking his opponent as Berrettini has been insane. Kudla produced a very inspired effort with a lot of luck and he got the break.
Tricky to predict but it would be foolish to back anybody but the man whose only loss on grass in the past two years has been against Novak Djokovic.
