Maia Continues her Rise
Beatriz Haddad Maia continues her ascension among the elites on the WTA Tour. Following her first singles title (and a doubles) last week in Nottingham, she now finds herself in another semifinal – this time up against a formidable adversary.
It will be intriguing to see how she fares and for what it is worth, she has set the precedent. Earlier in the week, she knocked out two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova in straight sets to kickstart her Birmingham Classic journey.
Thereafter, she defeated Magdalena Frech in a three-set thriller with 6-1, 5-7, 7-6(3), displaying remarkable tenacity and grit. The Brazilian’s game improved greatly thereafter as she took out third seed Camila Giorgi without really breaking a sweat (6-3, 6-2).
Maia is experienced and while she lacks top-tier experience unlike Halep, she has made great leaps this season. She is now at her career-best ranking as World No. 32 and has achieved a fair bit on the singles and doubles circuit.
By the looks of it, she looks more equipped now to take on Simona than the last two times combined.

Halep Finds her Groove
Number two seed Simona Halep will be pleased with her week in Birmingham. The former world number one’s preparations for her second Wimbledon title are off to a great start as she dismissed Lesia Tsurenko, Harriet Dart, and Katie Boulter without dropping a set.
In these matches, Halep dropped just 15 games en route to the semis where she will face her sternest test yet.
It has been a rocky year for World No. 20 who is on the hunt for her first singles title since the Melbourne Set 1 in January. Since then, she has reached the semifinal on only two occasions – Dubai and Indian Wells. Her clay swing wasn’t that eventful as she lost early in Paris and Rome. Simona did however reach the quarters in Madrid.
With five major and 36 tour-level finals, Halep is one of the very best in the game. That said, since her injury-stricken season last year, the 30-year-old hasn’t quite been the same.
She fell out of love with tennis and found her passion back after hiring the services of Patrick Mouratoglou in the Spring of this year.
Halep v Maia Prediction and Tip
This is going to be a brilliant match. Halep faces a tricky challenge in Maia and on paper, her superior pedigree alone should be enough to get her through.
But Beatriz has been making waves and the Romanian is not entirely immune to shocking losses. The match can swing either way.
