Shuai Zhang v Sorana Cirstea Head to Head

It’s an advantage for Cirstea with 2-1 although, she lost their last meeting in Miami earlier this year. Zhang took that match 6-1, 6-1.

Zhang Continues her Grass Resurgence

A quarterfinal in Nottingham last week and now, the semis in Birmingham – Shuai Zhang is having herself quite run on the grass courts as she gears up for the Wimbledon.

This is not entirely surprising seeing that the 33-year-old veteran has had her moments (sandwiched between massive downs) on the tour. The Chinese player was a runner-up in Nottingham last season alongside reaching the semifinal at the Wimbledon mixed doubles.

This year, she won the Lyon Open to bag her first singles title since 2017. Admittedly, her form took a hit after that as she moved on to lose early in the next several events. The Miami Open was an exception where she dismissed Clara Tauson and Cirstea to reach round three.

So far this week, the eighth-seeded Zhang has been quite remarkable as she surpassed the likes of Elena-Gabriela Ruse (6-2, 2-6, 7-5), Jana Fett (5-7, 6-3, 6-3), and the resilient Ukrainian Dayana Yastremska (7-5, 6-4).

Cirstea shouldn’t prove to be too difficult of a challenge but given her erratic form, anything can happen.

A Rare SF for Cirstea

Grass courts have never been a strong suit for Sorana Cirstea; throughout her career, there are hardly any instances where the 32-year-old Romanian had a deep run on the surface.

At Wimbledon, she had never made it past the third round but seeing her performance this week, that may very well change soon.

Seeded sixth for the tournament, #36-ranked Cirstea surpassed Shelby Rogers, Aleksandra Krunic, and Donna Vekic to make it this far.

Sorana’s season so far has been more or less like Zhang’s – full of erratic losses and inconsistency. Her previous best run came in Istanbul and Lyon where she reached the semifinal before losing to Veronika Kudermetova and Yastremska respectively.

That said, she did reach the fourth round in a couple of big events like the Indian Wells and the Australian Open; in the latter, she upset a few big names like Petra Kvitova and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.

Zhang v Cirstea Prediction and Tip

This is another even affair that can quite likely swing either way.

But if we had to pick a winner, Zhang makes the obvious choice. She is experienced and has an impeccable doubles pedigree that should be enough to help her get through Cirstea.

Tip: Zhang to Win, Over 21.5 Games: 7/5 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
