Greek number one Sakkari was one of those few players who featured in all three grass tournaments which were on offer on the WTA tour. And ended up with a 5-3 win-loss record.
Sakkari, who has never moved past the third round at Wimbledon – her worst Grand Slam record – began reasonably well as she moved into the quarterfinals at Nottingham and followed it up with an even better showing in Berlin.
At the latter, she defeated Leolia Jeanjean, Daria Saville and Daria Kasatkina to move into the semifinals, where she took the first set against Belinda Bencic. Only for her to go down in three sets.
And Anhelina Kalinina then got the better of her Sakkari in the very first round despite being 3/1 to win it.
Sakkari wouldn’t have been too chuffed about that defeat, but at the same time it would have given her some time to regroup and try and work things out here. Can she start off with am emphatic win in this?

Hives Hoping to Return to Her Best
Having been out of the sport since September 2019, Hives returned to play in her first competitive match earlier this year. She made it to the second qualifying round at the Australian Open.
Since then, she has barely moved the needle as far as results are concerned, and that’s even at the ITF circuit level, reaching just the second round in one of them.
Which is why, Hives went into the qualifiers here as a rank outsider to win even one round, let alone qualify for the main draw.
Helped undoubtedly by the withdrawal of Priscilla Hon in the final qualifying round, Hives had earlier defeated Gabriela Lee and Sachia Vickery. Both, in straight sets, despite being 7/2 and 2/1 odds to win them.
Now in the main draw, she takes on Sakkari but even without considering the possibility of an upset, Hives looks to have done enough to give her the confidence for the rest of the season.
Sakkari v Hives Prediction and Tip
This shouldn’t be too difficult for Sakkari, who starts off 1/50 to win this. Expect a Hives fight in one of the sets but that’s the extent of this encounter.
