Paul Experiences Wimbledon for the First Time

Paul is yet another man who will be making his main draw debut at Wimbledon.

Not that he is a novice in Grand Slams, rather that he has never got out of qualifying before, and his world ranking has not been good enough to merit an automatic invitation to the tournament.

Yet, after a year which has seen him win his maiden ATP title on the hard courts of Stockholm last November, the American is ready to experience this grass court tournament for the first time.

His initial exposure to grass did not go so well, beaten in the first round of Rosmalen. He had more joy at Queen’s Club, beating both Denis Shapovalov and Stan Wawrinka, before losing to Matteo Berrettini, who would go on to defend his crown.

More recently still in Eastbourne, he beat the Argentine Francisco Cerundulo, before losing in three sets to Jannik Sinner, the world number 13.

Verdasco a Wimbledon Veteran

By contrast, Verdasco is a grizzled veteran of Wimbledon, having made the main draw ever since first qualifying in 2004 (except two years ago when the tournament was cancelled because of the pandemic).

His best result here was in 2013 when he reached the quarter-finals, although he has also reached the fourth round on four occasions, most recently back in 2019.

As part of his grass court preparations, he played in the Challenger tournaments in Nottingham and Ilkley, reaching the second round of each.

However, he would have been disappointed last week to fail to qualify for Mallorca on home soil.

Paul v Verdasco Prediction and Tip

Paul may feel some understandable nerves making his Wimbledon debut, especially against a man with a solid track record at the All England Club. But Verdasco is not the player than he once was, and is now at the veteran stage of his career. The American should prevail in the end.

Tip: Paul to win: 8/11 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
