Jordan Thompson could not wait to get away from clay and he played many matches on grass to wash away the send. Thanks to that, he will arrive at Wimbledon with an 11-3 record which is a superb display. He played two challenger finals (Nottingham, Surbiton) and won one of them.
He’s generally showed a rather high level on grass but lost quite easily to Baez in Mallorca. That’s something he needs to fix because Baez is not that great on grass.
That’s kind of the biggest problem for Thompson. When he’s playing well he can beat anyone but when he’s not feeling it he’ll lose quickly. It’s like a less talented Fognini. Their games are quite similar, not much power but quite precise and very solid movers.
Thompson will need to take these matches seriously and he has a tricky opponent in round one.

Baena Without Any Grass Matches
Roberto Carballes Baena only played 14 matches on grass so far and that number should tell you whether he likes playing on it or not.
He doesn’t and used all this time to play some clay matches in preparation for Wimbledon. Despite not playing much he can play well at times. He never advanced past the first round at Wimbledon but he can certainly win matches on this surface.
Baena is a typical clay courter with a lot of stamina and great defensive skills. He’ll keep the ball in play for as long as he can grinding you down until he wins the point. Pretty good strategy and he executes it well but a player such as Thompson on grass should be a problem.
He will need to attack Thompson to win but he’s not great at it.
Thompson v Carballes Baena Prediction and Tip
Jordan Thompson is the favourite in this one and with very good reason. For starters, he played 14 matches on grass ahead of Wimbledon and Carballes Baena played that amount of matches on grass in all his career. There is simply a totally different mindset when it comes to grass tennis.
Thompson moves better, he has the better serve and enough aggression to finish off points quickly. That’s what he needs to do and I think he will do it well enough. Back the Aussie to take this one.
