Kontaveit Off to a Solid Start

World No. 3 Anett Kontaveit of Estonia started her Wimbledon campaign with a solid 7-5, 6-1 win over Bernarda Pera. The match went on for 82 minutes and saw the number two seed prevail on the back of a 70% first-service win rate and a massive 23 winners to Pera’s 10.

However, Anett did commit 22 unforced errors on her part – this may be forgiven against early opponents but as the competition picks up, such errors will prove to be costly.

Having started the season on a brilliant note, Kontaveit’s form has since dropped down significantly. The 26-year-old was a semifinalist in Sydney and later reached consecutive finals in Doha and St. Petersburg.

Thereafter, across the Sunshine Doubles and the entirety of clay swing, Anett managed just three wins in five tournaments. A few of these losses (Ann Li, Petra Martic, Ajla Tomljanovic) were rather surprising too, so the precedent is certainly there for Niemeier to follow.

She also split with her long-term coach Dmitry Tursunov this month, so that may also play a part in her run in London.

Wang too Easy for Niemeier

Jule Niemeier, age 22, dismissed Xinyu Wang of China in an hour and 15 minutes to start her Wimbledon campaign. The German had a similar match to that of Kontaeveit, striking 22 winners while committing 17 unforced errors.

This is Niemeier’s second time at Wimbledon, but the first time with a direct entry into the main draw.

Since the same time last year, Jule has made some remarkable leaps in the ranking to crack the top 100; she is now close to her career-best ranking of World No. 94.

Niemeier is armed with a Challenger title from Makarska and an ITF title from Zagreb. Her tally for the season is 25-13 – that said, she still lacks the necessary composure to take on the elites on the WTA Tour.

Kontaveit v Niemeier Prediction and Tip

Expect a straight-set win from Kontaveit. This match should be a good learning experience for the young German but at this stage, it is difficult to imagine her subduing a player with a stature like her opponent’s.

Tip: Kontaveit to Win 2-0: 4/5 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
