Paul Tames Verdasco in Opener
With back to back quarterfinal appearances at the Queen’s Club competition and Eastbourne International, Paul had entered Wimbledon this year with some form and practice.
And taking on the struggling veteran Fernando Verdasco, it gave him a good chance to get himself tuned up for the bigger challenges to come.
Paul, who had never made it to the Wimbledon main draw before this, registered a 6-1, 6-2, 7-6 (4) win over Verdasco, needing just an hour and 45 minutes to get there.
Braving six aces off his opponent’s racquet, Paul won 75% of his own serve points and broke Verdasco six times in that encounter, while losing his own service just twice – both in the third set.
The American will now hope to dish out something similar to his next opponent who needed to huff and puff to a win over Max Purcell, despite being a 3/10 favourite coming into the encounter.

Mannarino Manages to Make it Through
At two sets to love in the first round, Mannarino looked to have lived up to his heavy favourite tag against Purcell, but in the end it did not turn out to be a straightforward win for the Frenchman by any stretch.
The world number 86 dropped the next two sets before converting his only match-point in the 10th game of the final set to scrape through to the win.
Mannarino was on court for a little less than four hours and won 6-3, 7-6 (0), 4-6, 4-6, 6-4, building on his semifinal appearance at the Rosmalen Open on grass earlier this month.
The Frenchman has a good overall record on grass too – in fact some of his best performances have come on it having won 56 and lost 40 of his matches on this surface coming into this year’s Wimbledon.
Can he give Paul a bit of a working over?
Paul v Mannarino Prediction and Tip
While Paul is ranked 32nd in the world to his opponent’s 86th, the winning odds don’t reflect that wide a gulf and that is down to Mannarino’s overall experience on grass. Paul, at 4/6, looks a tempting punt for this.
