Niemeier Continues to Surprise

Up until the last week, not a lot of people were familiar with Jule Niemeier, a 22-year-old hailing from Dortmund, Germany. And they can’t be blamed for it; the German is the current World No. 97 and focussed mainly on the ITF and Challenger circuits.

For what it is worth, Jule has been impressive in 2022. She is 29-13 and has a title each from the two circuits. And now, she is building her form for the WTA Tour too.

Her last two events – Berlin and Bad Homburg – ended in early losses. So when Niemeier arrived in London, her chances of becoming one of the elite eight were astronomically high. And yet, here we are.

The campaign has seen her post wins over Xinyu Wang, number two seed Anett Kontaveit, Ukrainian veteran Lesia Tsurenko, and local favourite Heather Watson. Before this, Jule’s best major result of the year was reaching the first round in Paris and Melbourne.

Only one set was dropped en route in London and with this, she has also delivered the best Grand Slam and WTA performance of her career.

A Historic Quarterfinal for Maria

Tatjana Maria, age 34, has been a tennis pro since the mid-2000s. She peaked as No. 46 in 2017 and is now ranked #103, resuming her career only last season after a brief maternity hiatus.

On Sunday, she delivered the biggest win to make her Grand Slam quarterfinal debut – in style.

She was up against the number 12 seed Jelena Ostapenko, who came on the back of a brilliant run on grass. The match went on for a little over two hours and saw Maria win 5-7, 7-5, 7-5 – saving two match points in the second set.

Tatjana kept her calm and dug deep into her rich experience to save the crucial break points and stage a comeback to take the set, and match.

In the round before, she delivered a straight-set rout of the number five seed Maria Sakkari. Her other two opponents at SW19 were Sorana Cirstea and Astra Sharma.

Her tally for the year now is 35-16 and like Niemeier, she too has played in a fair bit of ITF and Challenger events. Maria, however, has clearly been more successful on the whole with titles in ITF Rome and WTA Bogota, and quality wins over many well-known WTA players.

Niemeier v Maria Prediction and Tip

This match can swing either way. Maria is well-experienced and continues to impress with her high-profile wins; Jule has the advantage of youth on her side.

Expect an entertaining affair with many games in the offing. As for the favourite, Maria has a slight edge due to her overall momentum.
