There was a time back in 2014 when Zhu showed remarkable form on clay, winning almost everything that came her way on the ITF circuit.
Since then, however, her form has become a no-show on this surface and Zhu has scooped up just four of the 18 matches she has featured in on clay. That was till the start of this season.
2022 has been slightly better for her though, with Zhu making it through the qualifiers to make it to the opening round at the French Open, having earlier also entered round at Karlsruhe.
Zhu’s last tournament at the highest level came at Wimbledon on grass where she fell in round one but then shifted to the hard court surfaces of the Corroios-Seixal ITF competition and will now be playing on clay.
This rapidly shifting of surfaces might not make things very easy for the Chinese player and could give Burel bit of an edge.

Four-Match Losing Streak for Burel
Burel prefers playing on clay having also made it as far as the third round at the French Open in 2020 – her best Grand Slam showing.
This year, however, Burel’s showing on clay has been underwhelming and almost worrisome. The French player did reach the quarterfinal of the Makarska Open early June but is coming off a first round loss at the Bastad Open last week.
She had earlier lost her opener to Katharina Gerlach at the Caserta ITF competition in a surprise result.
Burel’s overall pedigree on clay is a lot better than her opponent’s but this year things have been off-colour for the Frenchwoman. Can she turn that around here?
