Pera Finds Welcome Form in Hungary
Pera had been in poor form when she arrived in Budapest, having seen her ranking tumble from her previous high of 59, and not having been beyond the second round of a senior WTA event since 2019.
But having come off a five match losing streak, she has managed to put some of that behind her, by winning four in a row, including the two matches she needed just to qualify for the tournament in the first place.
She was fortunate enough to meet another even more lowly ranked qualifier in the first round, Marina Bassois of Spain, and dealt with her challenge with ease.
The number five seed Aliaksandra Sasnovich of Belarus presented a more formidable second round opponent, but after a first set where dropping serve seemed an occupational hazard for both women, Pera just managed to hold hers at the vital moments to claim the advantage,
And she raced into a four game lead at the start of the second set as Sasnovich fluffed her lines again.
The Belarussian did save five match points, but the pressure told in the end and Pera could claim her place in the last eight.

Cocciaretto Battles Past Wimbledon Doubles’ Champion
A year ago, Cocciaretto played what turned out to be her last match of 2021 in Budapest before her season was curtailed by knee surgery.
She has gradually been working herself back to fitness, playing mainly on the Challenger tour, and has appeared in three finals this year, winning clay court events in Portugal and Italy.
In the first round she overcame the Hungarian Reka-Luka Jani in straight sets, before facing the Wimbledon’s double champion, Katerina Siniakova of the Czech Republic.
The first set saw seven breaks of serve, but Cocciaretto claimed it by holding hers more often.
The second set began with the pair swapped breaks twice, but, this time, it was the Italian who proved more fallible, was broken again, and the match went to a third set.
The erratic serving continued into the third set, and three times one of the women went a break up only to be immediately broken again.
However, serving to stay in the match, Siniakova was broken to love for what proved to be the final time.
Pera v Cocciaretto Prediction and Tip
Pera will want to maintain her new found momentum, and she may think she will seldom get a better chance to reach the semi-final of a WTA tournament than playing an opponent who survived a gruelling three set battle in the second round.
It may be tight, but the American might just edge it.
