On her Hamburg debut last year, Andrea Petkovic won four matches to reach the final only to finish runner-up to Elena-Gabriela Ruse. It was Petkovic’s first final since 2015. A month later she went on to win the Cluj-Napoca Open to win her seventh career title from her 13th final, ending a six-year drought.
The Cluj-Napoca triumph was her fifth title on clay from seventh final on the surface. Over the years, the 34-year-old has been a terrific player on clay and a 60% win record is a testament to that.
While she ended years of dry spell last year, this year has been a difficult one for the German. Petkovic was a quarterfinalist in Melbourne Summer Set 1, after she won two matches to begin the season. But ever since then she has won just three main draw matches, while losing nine of them.
Her last main draw win came over Garbine Muguruza on grass in Berlin last month. Since then she lost three in a row. Can the eighth seed end the losing streak with an opening round win in Hamburg?
Korpatsch Struggling at the Tour Level
Facing Petkovic will be World no. 111 Tamara Korpatsch, who is on a six-match losing streak in the main draws at the tour level.
The German has won just two main draw matches on the tour this year. one of those wins came in Lyon, while the other came over Camila Giorgi in Stuttgart in April. Since then, she lost in the second round in Stuttgart to Emma Raducanu and made first round exits from ‘s-Hertogenbosch, Berlin, Bad Homburg, Wimbledon and Lausanne.
At the lower level, Korpatsch was a finalist in WTA 125 in Marbella this year, finishing runner-up to Egypt’s Mayar Sherif.
Korpatch has won all 10 of her ITF titles on clay with the most recent of those wins coming in Le Havre, France in March. The 27-year-old, who reached the Round of 16 last year, will be hoping to win her opener again this year.
