His tennis career has never shown the kind of dazzle that would make a lot of people sit up and take notice and Kovalik is currently looking to just salvage the situation.
Having fallen to 190th in the world after possessing a career-best ranking of 80th, Kovalik will be looking to make that transition from his showing on the Challenger circuit to the highest level.
After playing in the main draw of just two tournaments during the first hard court swing early in the season – and he lost in the first round at both – Kovalik’s focus has been on clay and the Challenger circuit.
Kovalik has made it to the semifinals of a couple of such tournaments and the quarterfinal of another two.
And now, more than five months after he played in the main draw of an ATP tournament, Kovalik returns to the first round of another. Can he break the jinx and win this one?
