It has been a very forgettable season for Sousa, who had entered this competition in Kitzbuhel with a kind of form rut that looked sticky and difficult to get out of.
The 61st-ranked Sousa, who was a finalist at Geneva earlier this year, had followed that up with a second round appearance at French Open. Hell seemed to have broken loose after that for the Portuguese 33-year-old.
Sousa had lost that second round match to Loreno Sonego and followed it up with six successive defeats, including a couple of them on clay as well.
In fact, such has been his form, Sousa had entered his opening match against Vit Kopriva as an underdog, with bookmakers offering 1/1 for his victory. In the end, he carved out a 6-1, 7-5 win, sealing his second round berth but more vitally breaking a seven-match and a two-month long losing streak.

Lehecka Surprises Monteiro
Thiago Monteiro has gone into his opening round match as a favourite but Lehecka managed to tame him in straight sets to clinch the second round berth.
Lehecka, who had reached the second round at Gstaad last week, registered just his third career win on clay to set up this meeting against Sousa. He won 7-6 (6), 6-4 in a match lasting an hour and 49 minutes.
The world number 68 slammed 10 aces and held the second serve edge over his opponent (winning 56% of the points to Monteiro’s 49%).
In turn he also warded off a set-point in the opening set to clinch the deal and will now hope to push the out-of-sorts Sousa as he attempts to make it to his second ATP quarterfinals having first done it in Rotterdam earlier this year.
