Isner’s Title Defence Opens After Bye in Round One
John Isner is vying for a 7th ATP title here in Atlanta having first played here in 2010.
He first lifted the title in 2013 when he defeated Kevin Anderson in the final. Isner is also the defending champion, defeating Brandon Nakashima in last year’s final.
The American veteran had received a bye in the first round as he is seeded number 2 in the tournament. Isner recently played in Newport which is the traditional grass season closing event. He had lost to eventual champion Maxime Cressy in the semifinal.
Isner is 17-14 this year and has played one final in that span, which was on the clay of Houston. He announced last season that he will be playing a lighter schedule this year onwards in order to spend more time with his family.
The world number 25 is in mixed form as he hasn’t really faced many first round exits, neither has he made any deep runs.
Atlanta has been very special to Isner. The courts here are extremely fast and suit the big serving nature of the tall American. Having won the title 6 times in 11 years just shows how much he prefers the conditions here.
