World No. 7 Jessica Pegula got her Washington Open campaign off to a flying start as she dumped fellow American Hailey Baptiste in just 73 minutes in the opening round on Monday.
The top seed didn’t face a single break point in the match, while she broke the World no. 148 twice in each set to win 6-2, 6-2.
Solid on her serve throughout the match, Pegula dropped just five points on her first serve and eight on her second.
The win improved the 28-year-old to 26-13 in 2022. Her top performances this year includes a runner-up finish in Madrid, a run to the semifinals in Miami and quarterfinal appearances at the Australian and the French Opens.
Pegula has featured in four WTA finals in her career, winning just one title. And that triumph came at the Washington Open in 2019, when she beat Camila Giorgi in the final. Seeded no. 1 in this year’s tournament she will be hoping to go that deep once again.

Saville Digs Deep to Down Bjorklund
World No. 88 Daria Saville outlasted Sweden’s Mirjam Bjorklund in a three-hour-and-nine-minute opening round contest on Monday.
Fighting back from a set down, Saville put up a gutsy performance to edge past the qualifier 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7-4).
Saville showed nerves of steel as she saved four break points at 5-5 in the final set, before racing past the World No. 126 in the deciding set tiebreak.
Saville had 19 break points in the contest but she could convert just three of them. Her opponent too broke thrice but she held just 11 break points in the match.
The 28-year-old Aussie improved her season record to 20-15 across levels. Her best this year came in Miami where she was a quarterfinalist. She also made it to the Round of 16 in Indian Wells and was in the last eight in Guadalajara.

Expect Pegula to continue her charge in the tournament. The American should beat the Aussie in straight sets.
