31-year-old Canadian Rebecca Marino is the current World No. 111 – a far cry from her career-best ranking at the #38 spot she achieved in 2011.
After spending the last several years on and off the tour, Marino is finally playing tennis consistently this season. She has been practising on the ITF circuits and her tally for the year stands at an impressive 32-14.
Rebecca’s highlights include three ITF finals on hard courts and reaching the main draw in all three Grand Slams as a qualifier.
In the Citi Open, she began as a qualifier and dispatched Valentini Grammatikopoulou and Sachia Vickery in three sets to reach the main draw. In the opener, she stunned the former World No. 1, Venus Williams, 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 and halted the American’s comeback at home.

Petkovic, Looking Confident
Former world number nine, current World No. 68 Andrea Petkovic is off to a confident start in Washington as she defeated the number eight seed Clara Tauson 6-2, 6-2 without breaking a sweat.
It has been a slow season for the veteran German, whose tally now has improved to 13-11. Most recently, Andrea was a quarterfinalist in Hamburg, where she retired in her match with Anett Kontaveit.
However, that deep run was preceded by a litany of early exits in qualifying/opening matches on the WTA Tour. Petkovic has clearly struggled a great deal with her form this year.

The German may have a superior pedigree, but the form is not on her side. Marino has the experience and a fair bit of momentum – this should be enough for her to dismiss the out-of-touch Andrea and reach the next round.
