Sofia Kenin v Sloane Stephens Head to Head

This will be their first meeting on the WTA Tour.

Kenin, on Shaky Grounds

It has been a season to forget for the 2020 Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin.

After starting the year on a decent note with a quarterfinal run in Adelaide, she fell in the first round in Sydney and Melbourne. The same rut continued across the Middle-East swing in Dubai and Doha, and later in the States in Indian Wells.

Around this time, Sofia injured herself, and as a result, the 23-year-old skipped the entirety of the clay and grass season. She is now ranked World No. 416.

It wasn’t until last week that the seven-time WTA career finalist returned to the tour. The tournament was in Washington DC, where she fell to the struggling Colombian Camila Osorio 7-6(2), 6-1.

Things will be a bit demanding for Kenin in the foreseeable future as she looks to reclaim lost ground in both – momentum and form.

Stephens in a Similar Boat

It has been a similar story for the 2017 US Open champion Sloane Stephens, although she is still in a comparatively better position than Kenin.

The 29-year-old did win her first singles title since the 2018 Miami Open this season in Abierto Zapopan, beating Marie Bouzkova in the final. That run, however, was followed by early exits in Indian Wells, Miami, Charleston, Madrid, Rome, and Strasbourg.

It wasn’t the Roland Garros that Sloane rediscovered her groove, reaching the quarterfinal in Paris. However, she followed that again with first-round losses in Bad Homburg, Wimbledon, and most recently, Citi Open.

Her last week’s loss to Ajla Tomljanovic has undoubtedly raised many questions regarding her form (10-11 as of this week), making her prospects of going deep in Toronto all the more difficult.

Kenin v Stephens Prediction and Tip

This match can go either way; both players are out of touch, but Stephens may be more fit than her compatriot. However, Kenin did play a good game last week and if she can muster the same spirit again, there is no reason why she cannot put up a fight.
