Hugo Gaston v Jack Draper Head to Head

This will be a first meeting between the two.

Gaston Advances as Diallo Retires

Hugo Gaston made it to the main draw after his second qualifying round opponent Gabriel Diallo retired during the second set.

The 21-year-old Frenchman had taken the opening set 6-2 and was up 2-1 in the second when the Canadian player retired from the contest. Interestingly, Gaston had received a walkover in the first qualifying round as well. He was up 3-0 in the first set when American Michael Mmoh had retired in the first qualifier.

As a result of the two retirements, Gaston will be making his debut in Montreal.

The World No. 76 is 10-14 this season. His best so far was a quarterfinal finish in ‘s-Hertogenbosch and a run to the Round of 32 at Roland Garros.

While Gaston has a very good career record on clay, he is 8-17 on hard courts over his young career and 3-7 on the surface this year. So things don’t look very encouraging but he would look to draw inspiration from his Paris Masters performance last year, when he went from qualifiers to the quarterfinals.

Draper Too Gains From Opponent’s Retirement

Britain’s Jack Draper, too, moved into the main draw in Montreal after his opponent in the second qualifying round retired after just four games in the match.

Draper was up 3-1 in the first set when France’s Quentin Halys was forced to retire.

The left-handed Briton had looked convincing in the first qualifying round though, defeating Italy’s Roberto Marcora 6-3, 6-0 in just above an hour.

The 20-year-old is 8-6 on the tour. He has had a splendid year at the Challenger level, reaching his first four finals at that level and winning all of them. Point to note: All those titles came on hard courts (three in Forli, Italy and one in Saint-Brieuc, France).

On the tour, Draper’s best was a semifinal finish in Eastbourne and he won his opening round matches in Miami, Madrid, Queen’s Wimbledon and Washington.

Making his Montreal debut, the World No. 82 will be looking to make an early impression and will fancy his chances in the opening round.

Gaston v Draper Prediction and Tip

The two left-handed debutants have found a similar path to the main draw. It’s an interesting matchup but given Draper’s form this year and his overall performance on hard courts this season, he will have slight edge going into this contest.

Tip: Draper to win: 2/5 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
