Jessica Pegula v Asia Muhammad Head to Head

Their only previous meeting came in the WTA125 series of competitions in 2019 when Pegula overcame Muhammad 6-3, 6-0 in the second round.

Pegula at Career-Best Despite Early Washington Ouster

After a clay court swing to remember, Pegula hasn’t quite been up to the scratch in the couple of tournaments that have followed.

Unable to play at any of the grass court competitions in the lead-up to the year’s only grass court Grand Slam, Pegula went into Wimbledon slightly undercooked. And while she was able to put it across Donna Vekic and Harriet Dart, the American fell to Petra Martic in the third round despite being 2/5 to win it.

Pegula then entered the Washington Open for her first hard court competition since the Miami Open semifinal but Daria Saville sent her packing in the second round.

Her opener here should not give Pegula too much trouble but a solid performance to kick-start a bit of run heading into US Open would be the need of the hour.

Muhammad 19-2 on Hard Court Surfaces

Asia Muhammad’s 19-2 record in hard court competitions obviously consists of competitions on the ITF circuit but for the 31-year-old to win three successive tournaments at that sounds like a good deal.

Especially when she has been able to convert that form into something substantial at the highest level too.

While Muhammad was knocked out in the first round of the Washington Open qualifiers last week, she overcame Andrea Petkovic and Donna Vekic here to make the main draw.

And in the first round here, the 3/1 underdog against Madison Keys, registered a shock 7-6 (5), 6-4 victory to move through to the second round.

Asia has already moved up the WTA Rankings chart and can be expected to break into the top 150 irrespective of what happens in this match. Another win here, however, could take her closer to her career best ranking of 124th too.

Pegula v Asia Prediction and Tip

While a win over Keys was a big achievement by itself, Pegula is a different kettle of fish and a much better pedigreed player. Expect Pegula to come through in straight sets.

Tip: Pegula to win in straight sets: 9/20 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
